- 1836 – The Lake Wimico and St. Joseph Canal and Railroad, the first steam railroad in Florida, opens.
- 1876 – The first through train from San Francisco, arrives in Los Angeles, after travelling over the Southern Pacific Railroad's newly completed Tehachapi Loop (pictured).
- 1887 – Charles Fairburn, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway 1944–1945, is born (d. 1945).
- 1986 – The Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad begins operations in Minnesota and South Dakota.
