"first artist of his race to achieve international acclaim."
[edit]In her biography, Marcia M Mathews wrote that Tanner was headed for Rome, "the home of art; and Edmonia Lewis, the outstanding Negro sculptress had been trained in Rome," when he decided to stay in Paris.
Lewis had won a gold medal in 1871 in Naples and had many European customers as well as Americans. A copy of her bust of Longfellow recently turned up in the UK. She caused a sensation in 1876 with her DEATH OF CLEOPATRA and was invited to show it two years later at a Chicago expo.

Rewrite request
[edit]As it stands now, this article is a carbon copy of the White House Biography. While the biography does not appear to be copywrited, it does not seem proper that Wikipedia should simply be a copy-and-paste from another source. Cowman109Talk 00:36, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- Oh dear, this page appears to have drifted down my watchlist. I'll get to work on the rewrite shortly, I suppose. Cowman109Talk 15:38, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Copy edits
[edit]I've ventured numerous copy edits to recent and well-researched contributions, material which this article sorely needed. Without altering content, repetitious material and unsourced hyperbole have been reduced. Thanks to those who beefed up this biography--good work. JNW (talk) 03:56, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
