Eight or ten blocks?

[edit]

When I saw the Ladd's Addition size changed from 8x8 to 8x10 blocks, I was a little confused; could I really have miscounted the blocks between Hawthorne and Division? As it turns out, no, I didn't. I live slightly east of Ladd's Addition, and when I walk to the Safeway on Hawthorne I do indeed find eight blocks between it and Division -- however, on the west side of Ladd's Addition there are ten blocks between the two streets! This is typical of Portland's casual understanding of grids and straight lines, but complicates description. Who wants to read that it's a rectangle longer on one side than on the other three? I suggest that the least confusing approach is to just leave it as 8x10 blocks; this is not exactly correct, but is close enough for most purposes. Wyvern 10:47, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Picture of Alley

[edit]

It's nice to have an illustration on this page, but that's a very dark picture. I suggest we find something, well, better illuminated (I'd happily do it myself if I had a digital camera at hand). For example, a picture of the neighborhood from the air (such as this one [1]) would be useful. A view of the green spaces or a suburban street might be nice local color. yeah this picture does nothing to inform the reader about ladd's addition.

[edit]

Now that I'm looking at this page again, I think it would be nice to have a list of neighborhood related weblinks if there are enough. I'll call three links 'enough,' purely arbitrarily, and start with the St. Philip Neri website: http://www.stphilipneripdx.org/ What else in Ladd's Addition has a website? The picture

[edit]

Yeah, I was looking for another picture, especially an above view of the 'hood. But it was hard to find one that was free use. Although I do think that the picture that's up shows a good view of what many of us portlanders see when we get lost in the vortex late at night. --Jacobtrosen 22:42, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A new picture

[edit]

I've snapped a few digital pictures of the area, and the one that seems most suitable is this one. It's pretty illustrative of the traffic circle, although kind of big at 1024x768 and 278kb. What do the other Wikipedians think? Wyvern (talk) 02:32, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, you can see it on the main page now. I didn't do that yesterday as I was having formatting trouble, but everything seems fine. Wyvern (talk) 18:53, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It looks a bit dark - now it's a little sunnier I might go snap some more appealing looking ones... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.224.227.88 (talk) 23:32, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Go right ahead; I might myself if I'm in the area with my camera. As it is, the picture here shows several common features of Portland neighborhoods: trees, a bicyclist, a bus stop, and rain... Wyvern (talk) 02:11, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for uploading that -- I agree, a good, representative photo. I think the article could manage at least two photos -- surely the text will grow someday, so even if it's a little "picture-heavy" in the short term, I wouldn't see a problem with that. Also a map would be a good addition... -Pete (talk) 04:51, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm adding a picture I just took today, because that is a good main representing picture (the main one), but it's a little dark. I have the same angle with a 'summer' picture. That's where everyone is outside, walking around and enjoy Ladd's Addition: In the Summer. Aeharding (talk) 04:20, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A new map

[edit]
Brick map of Ladd's Addition at the corner of SE 34th Avenue and SE Madison Street.

I took this picture while standing at the corner of SE 34th Avenue and SE Madison Street. It's a great map of Ladd's Addition, however I found it odd that the map was set in the sidewalk in the Hawthorne neighborhood rather than in Ladd's Addition. I'm going to try and track down the origin, artist, and details behind the brick map and why it's in the sidewalk on that particular corner of SE Portland. There's also another brick map of the NE Glisan and NE 39th Avenue neighborhood on the other edge of the block, which might be worth researching down the line as well.Bluecraze378 (talk)

The Ladds 500

[edit]

The Ladds 500 is an annual event where cyclists complete 500 laps of the central circle in Ladds addition. It seems to have grown is size and stature each year, and I think may merit inclusion in the primary article. Any thoughts?
