Same as for the Party of European Socialists, I do not want to undo the addition of this section point blank, as it is a good development. However, the source does not seem to support the figures provided. Unless I am missing something, this should therefore be rectified. Julius Schwarz (talk) 10:59, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Political alignment

[edit]

Hi everyone,

Following a conversation here, @Helper201 and I are reaching a stalemate.

Helper201 points out right that, because of WP:SYNTH] and WP:OR], the political alignment of the European People's Party must be based on sources that directly discuss the political alignment of this European party, and not that of its national member parties.

While this is correct, I think only listing the EPP as "centre-right", as it has historically been described, is misleading. The centre-right label is mostly to separate the EPP from other parties, such as the hard-right ECR, but the EPP has moved to the right over time and many of its member parties are clearly "right-wing" and not simply "centre-right".

And while, once again, we do focus on the European party in this page, the nature of European parties gives a large weight to national delegations in the establishment of the party line. So sticking to merely "centre-right" is not sufficiently accurate and I would argue that we can add a "faction" element to indicate that national member parties range from centre-right to right-wing.

Here, Helper201 says that sources should still focus on EPP factions, otherwise it's WP:SYNTH]. I disagree with this and, since the factions in question are directly the national delegations themselves (and not some mixed groups), sources that describe the national member parties are relevant to justify this and this do not constitute WP:SYNTH].

We left the discussion at that and decided to open it up here.

Finally, I would add that I suggested "faction" after seeing it used on the pages of other European parties in the same manner, but I would be just as content as we wrote "member parties" (or something similar) to make it clear what we are talking about. Maybe this alleviates the WP:SYNTH] concern. Julius Schwarz (talk) 14:24, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
