Two changes or one?
[edit]BillyH, you just merged the two relaunches of October and January - is that the actual way it happened? According to the BBC here it took two changes:
- Three months ago, the Dandy introduced this most radical relaunch, trying to stem decades of declining circulation.
...and...
- But aware of the deluge of media now directed at children, including films and games as well as TV, the comic's owners, DC Thomson, decided to go for wholesale change.
I've not even seen a Dandy in years so I'm far from knowledgable about it, but it seems to me that we should go back to the unmerged version. violet/riga (t) 18:35, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Looking at the first Dandy of the October relaunch, and this weeks issue, no change is apparent. I'd put it down to slightly misleading wording on the BBC's part. BillyH 18:48, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Fair enough, thanks. violet/riga (t) 18:52, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Albert Barnes' tenure
[edit]Did he leave in 1980 or 1982? Unless i am misreading, two adjacent sentences contradict each other: The original editor was Albert Barnes from the first issue up until 1982.... He was succeeded by Dave Torrie in 1980.... Lindsay H. 07:30, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
- Dunno where that went, it was completely removed. I've re-added that section. More reesearch needed though. Digifiend (talk) 13:28, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Fortnightly
[edit]Huh! Surely the fortnightly issues mean that The Dandy will soon merge with The Beano? If that happens I can only see Desperate Dan and Bananaman surviving - Winker Watson is too similar to Roger the Dodger, Beryl is too like Minnie the Minx, and Owen Goal is exactly like Ball Boy. Fair use rationale for Image:Dandylogo.png
[edit]Image:Dandylogo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Merge articles?
[edit]There seems to be a lot of duplication between the articles for The Dandy and Dandy Xtreme. As they are in fact one and the same, I think the articles should be merged. Also, why was the 2004 Dandy logo on this article replaced with the Xtreme one, which looks weird, as the DANDY lettering shouldn't be squiggly like that. Digifiend (talk) 09:30, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, it was replaced to update it to the current style, wasn't it? But can we please get a clean Dandy logo without the Xtreme wording, as used on the fun-size comics and the 2009 annual? The Xtreme logo should only be used on the Dandy Xtreme article, it doesn't represent the entire brand. Digifiend (talk) 09:59, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, almost forgot, the 1998 logo hasn't been completely retired, it's still used on the 70 Years annual. So we could use that instead. Neither form would be free of course, but I think it would be fair use. Digifiend (talk) 10:01, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
thebeanocomic.com
[edit]The third external link is defunct. Domain for sale or something... Digifiend (talk) 09:32, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- I've removed it now, since the site hasn't restored itself (i.e. it wasn't just down for some reason, it's definitely gone). Digifiend (talk) 13:21, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Bamboo Town and the Nigger Nazis
[edit]Is that information exactly correct? I remember 'The Nigger Nazis' as originating in a different way. Perhaps some issue citations, saying exactly where these strips appeared, could clear this up.. (unsigned)
OK, how do you remember the origin of the Nigger Nazis? The only reference I have ever seen to this strip was in a copy of 'Viz' in 2002 or 3, in which a letter writer claimed it was his favorite strip, ever. The letter itself was prob a wind-up, but the strip sounded real, in the context.. And you say you know it was, in fact, real? Any enlightenment welcome. 62.3.235.96 (talk) 10:30, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
During part of the war years (1939-45), the Chief decided to support Hitler, and the strip was then also known as 'The Nigger Nazis'. I thought that was vandalism. I don't think it even survived the war! Let me check... Digifiend (talk) 13:25, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- OK, Bamboo Town was previously missing from the list, so I'll just remove the nigger nazis bit. Note to the unregistered user who added it: citation required! Digifiend (talk) 13:26, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
You don't think it even survived the war...so you know it was real too? Certainly we don't want unsourced references, but what do you remember that might shed some light on this? 62.3.235.96 (talk) 10:30, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
- Confirmed, An Alphabet of Fun, a Dandy & Beano Golden Years book published in 1996, says it ran for 7 years from issue 1 - so it finished in 1944. Digifiend (talk) 12:47, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
OK, so Bamboo Town is real - what about the Nigger Nazis? 71.202.17.218 (talk) 08:00, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
This from a google group talk,

It sheds some light:

> Unless the strip changed drastically in later issues, "Bamboo Town" featured
> a society of chimpanzees! (It was revived with new art and stories as
> "Monkey Bizness" in the 1970's). So I can happily dispel that urban myth.[of the Nigger Nazis]
Sorry, Lew, you can't dispel that one so easily. During the 40s, British comics carried very strong propaganda including amongst others; Musso The Wop (He's A Big-a-da Flop) and Addy and Hermy (I recall them searching through bins for food). I've seen reprints of the niggers nazis, they were stereotypical "niggers" and they wore nazi uniforms. I remember them invading Bamboo Town carrying rifles with bayonets on the end. The chimps hated them. I think they got their arses kicked in each episode (I can't see them ever winning). Remember this was the 1940s with a totally different ethos from anything you've ever experienced.
By the way, even Viz mentioned them whilst having a pop at DC Thompson for stopping them from taking the piss out of Beano and Dandy characters.
Heil,
Sven. 213.205.240.221 (talk) 17:43, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
Kat and Kanary?
[edit]Watch the Burdie - a cat's attempts to catch a pet budgie; a similar idea to the Sylvester and Tweety Bird animated cartoons That sounds like the 1950s Beano strip Kat and Kanary! When did Watch the Burdie appear in The Dandy, and is it in fact the same strip? If so, this will need mentioning. Digifiend (talk) 13:20, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Gary Northfield
[edit]We have a problem. Apparently he's taken over Pinky's Crackpot Circus from Nick Brennan, but he doesn't have an article. It autoforwards to Derek the Sheep, the Beano character he owns the copyright of. The autoforward needs removing so we can create an article about Mr Northfield. Digifiend (talk) 13:27, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
C. McGhie
[edit]Red link - must be a newbie artist, I couldn't even find anything in Google (some farmer was top of the list instead). What's his first name, does anyone know? We need to know that if we're ever going to create an article for him. Digifiend (talk) 13:35, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:Xtreme.png
[edit]The image Image:Xtreme.png is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
- That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Sold by D.C. Thomson?
[edit]I've removed the following statement:
- This was after it was sold by D.C Thomson (makers of the Beano).
There's no reference anywhere else in the article to Thomson selling the Dandy; the Dandy Xtreme page says it's still published by them, and the Dandy Xtreme website says "copyright DC Thomson and Co." Unless anyone can provide a cite for it being sold, it looks like this simply isn't true. Daibhid C (talk) 20:49, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
- Too right! They'll never sell it - it would decimate Classics From The Comics and the 70 Years annuals. Obviously vandalism. Digifiend (talk) 12:44, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Dandy Xtreme Confusion
[edit]This article is very confusing! It says that it was renamed 'The Dandy Extreme' in 2007 but says in the lead that it "is" a [...] [currently running] comic. If it has simply been renamed, it should say "was" or a better idea would be to merge the two articles together. If the 'Dandy Extreme' is a notable new comic that has a different name (such as 'Simpsons' and 'Best of the simpsons', It should explicitly say that rather than say that it has been "renamed". Regards, FM [ talk to me | show contributions ] 17:48, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
- Renamed, change of format. Numbering continued (unlike when Beezer merged with Topper), so The Dandy is technically still running, just no longer weekly. Judging by the logo, and one of the free gifts with the current issue, it might just be Xtreme, minus the Dandy brand, before long. Digifiend (talk) 14:48, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

(Just) Scottish?
[edit]The opening sentence of this article reads, The Dandy was a Scottish children's comic published by the Dundee based publisher DC Thomson. Of course, it was published by a Dundee-based company, but describing it as Scottish makes it sound - to my ears a least - as if it was only available in Scotland, when it was, of course, widely sold and much-loved across the whole of the UK. Would it not be better for that first sentence to describe The Dandy as a British children's comic? There is already, after all, a link to the Dundee article right there in that sentence just in case there is anyone who does not know where in the UK Dundee is. I also note that The Beano, for example, which is published by the same house and distributed UK-wide, is described as British. P M C 12:34, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
