There is currently a vote to delete Jewish ethnocentrism. You can find the discussion, and vote, at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Jewish ethnocentrism. Thought you might want to know. Jayjg (talk) 15:30, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The article still exists because after it was deleted, certain editors felt a recurring need to recreate it. Eventually an admin re-created it and protected it in the form you see, in order to ensure that the overwhelming Wikipedia consensus for deleting it was not subverted. Jayjg (talk) 14:53, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Bolding of main words in article

[edit]

Hi there Tshilo12. Don't worry about the inconsistencies of stubs - most stubs start out as small articles, work out in the end and then become really good articles - but certainly do not worry about not bolding articles - sometimes these articles look nice with a bit of bolding and sometimes it disrupts the flow of the article to almost feel as if I'm bolding the wrong thing - but this is certainly useful. And, as you will realize, bolding anything in articles such as those to Mangarevan language at the moment, would seem to disrupt things. I'll see what I can do, but otherwise they're currently looking fine. Best of luck in continuing to edit these articles. Bobo192 09:07, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I've marked it as a speedy deletion. Someone will see it very soon and delete it for you. No worries there. Bobo192 09:33, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Just wanted to thank you for adding so much to the "O'Claire" article :) Keep up the good work!

[edit]

May I inquire why you removed the synagogue link from the Eau Claire page (and from the La Crosse page too I see)? I was surprised to see it show up there, but not particularly disturbed by it, but I'm curious why you saw fit to delete it without a word on the talk page as to why...in fact, you didn't even bother to comment on your deletion. What I find to be the strangest about your deletion is that the person who put it there, 4.158.171.24, apparently went around much of the midwest putting links to various synagogues in medium-sized cities...yet the only ones you saw fit to delete were the ones in Eau Claire and La Crosse. I admit, I'm not entirely impartial...as the webmaster, I'm wondering if you found something about the site particularly objectionable? TShilo12 09:01, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I don't find anything objectionable about it, just nothing notable. Why link to a single house of worship from a page devoted to a city? With that logic, every church, synagogue, etc should have a link there. If anything, there could be a link to a page which lists the places of worship in that city. The way it was seemed to be doing nothing but promoting a non-notable place of worship over others. I only deleted it from Eau Claire and La Crosse because I happened to see it there as I was going through cities from Wisconsin.--BaronLarf 15:05, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)

changing geo-stub

[edit]

You wrote: hahaha. this is bordering on the absurd. I have ended a number of my articles and stubs with Oceania-geo-stub, and someone has changed them to just plain stubs, so now I make it just a stub, and someone comes in behind me and changes it first to a geo-stub and then to an Oceania-geo-stub. Make up your minds ppl!

Nuthin' to do with me - and anyone involved in the Stub sorting project should know to leave it as a oceania-geo-stub. Which articles do you mean? Perhaps I can get to the bottom of this sillyness... Grutness|hello? 07:39, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The db may be the culprit. These stubs are very heavily used and the system does seem to slow down a bit with them. Not sure why that would result in the multile template changes though. As to an overhaul of the names, that would mean changing 50+ different regional stubs which between them are used on close to 10,000 articles. It's simply not practical. Oh, and submitting several times isn't always a good hing either, since that can stuff up page histories. Having said that, if you do want to help with stub sorting, then have a look over at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting. The folks over there would be only too pleased to have someone else helping! Grutness|hello? 07:54, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)
PS: Just an added note to say I've just looked in the Oceania geo stubs category - you're doing a lot of good work! Keep it up! (and remember to add "Category:French Polynesia! :) Also, if you have any info about them, perhaps you can add to the articles on the three islands of Tokelau I started a month or so back (Atafu, Fakaofo, and Nukunonu). Grutness|hello?

Marquesas Islands

[edit]

Hello,

I'm sorry, but I'm not an expert about the Marquesas Islands ; I just found this photo on the German Wikipedia and put it to the English one and French one.

If I have got time, I'll try to expand the article, but I don't know much about this subject ; maybe I'm French, but I never went there !

Move is done, let me know of any mistakes. Stan 01:24, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The article has been moved, but please make sure to fix all the re-directs; there are dozens. Jayjg (talk) 05:14, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I fixed all the double re-directs, and am trying to fix others, but it is slow. Jayjg (talk) 05:57, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I don't think that should be done until all the Ladino re-directs are fixed. Otherwise, we'll end up with 20 or 30 pages pointing to a re-direct page, rather than the article. Jayjg (talk) 06:06, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I've created a disambiguation page, which I think is standard in these cases. Let me know what you think. Also, for some reason, "What links here" on the Ladino page seems to give all sorts of false positives. I'm not sure why, do you see them too? Jayjg (talk) 11:07, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I came across this page, which you recently created to be a redirect to Zarphatic (which doesn't exist). I wanted to let you know that criterion number one for speedy deletion of redirects is "They refer to non-existent pages." In your edit summary you wrote that you were working on Zarphatic so I won't delete the redirect yet. Please, however, post what you have so far at Zarphatic or soon someone else will come along and delete it. — Knowledge Seeker 05:41, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick response! Yes, it's all part of the job. I think the reason they are deleted is because basically it's an article that has no information—if someone were to come to it all they would get would be a broken redirect. But rules are not meant to be unreasonable, and I saw that you were working on the target article. In fact, you just reminded me that I should put up redirects to the Bengali grammar article I've been working on, now that it has some content. In any case, I look forward to seeing your Zarphatic grow! — Knowledge Seeker 05:56, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the compliments, but of course the comparison is hardly fair. Not only is Bengali not extinct, but it has the fourth most native speakers. On top of that, I have a decent understanding of it as it is the language of my culture, although it is not my native language. That combination (decent speaker, but non-native) actually puts me in a good position to write about it. In any case, good job again, and happy editing! — Knowledge Seeker 06:29, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Movement of page

[edit]

Hi, i saw your message earlier but it took me a while to figure out how to reply to it. i'm relatively new to wikipedia as you might tell, and i'm sorry for overlooking some basic courtesy. i also apologize for making a rash and irrational decision to move the page "Chinese courtesy name" to "Chinese style name". In my opinion, it is not to say which one is more official. But a search under Google returns 836 results for "courtesy" and only 108 for "style". So i guess i'll shift it back?

Re: Bhili language

[edit]

Hi, Tomer, thanks for contacting me. Unfortunately, I'm going to be of very little help—I am not familiar with the Bhili language. I am impressed, though, with what you guys have done with it in such a short time—this is what makes Wikipedia great. The vowel signs look fine to me now, but as I don't know the correct spelling I cannot advise you on i versus ī. Unfortunately, English is my native language, I am pretty good at Spanish, and I know a good deal of Bengali; but I only know a bit of Hindi and no Gujarati and therefore am not active on either of those Wikipedias. I'm sorry to say that the Hindi article you cited does not exist; the parenthetical text is the equivalent of our MediaWiki:Noarticletext (for instance, see hi:Tomer, which is obviously not an article). I'll post something that the India noticeboard to see if anyone can help. Thanks for your good work! — Knowledge Seeker 08:07, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Jews in China

Friend, I invite if you possible to contribute more to Jews in China, Kaifeng Jews, and other potential future articles on the subject. Egypt

[edit]

Hello Tomer, thanks for the Aryan information in the talk page of Phoenicia. Since you know a lot about the word origins of the name of countries, I was wondering do you know what the word Egypt means. Re: Number of speakers of Sanskrit

[edit]

Hi, Tomer, thanks for contacting me. I'll take a look and see if I can add anything. I haven't looked closely enough yet to comment on the specific issues. Also, if I might make a suggestion: while it is important to be assertive, I think a couple of your comments (such as "Dum dam dumb domm dim, how many ways can you spell 'moronic'?") might have been a bit over the top (and it does sound a bit like Tom Bombadil, I have to admit). In my experience, taking such strong stands and threatening to discredit Wikipedia does not help to make others more amenable to one's suggestions. Oh, by the way, I don't believe there is any word "Hindian" (nor is there an "Indian" language). However, since my native language is English, it is safe to assume that regardless of what you were referring to, you are correct. Don't mean to sound preachy, and I'll get back to you on the number of speakers business. — Knowledge Seeker 21:19, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Chinese terms for Judaism

[edit]

Hi. I believe Diao jin jiao was a term used by Chinese Jews for themselves, not necessarily used by mainstream Chinese in reference to them. As for Youtai--is this certainly a term used by Chinese Jews for themselves, or used by others in reference to them? It's the only term widely used in Chinese today and carries, from what I know, no particularly implication. Thus...perhaps we can clarify on the Jews in China and Kaifeng Jews pages--which, by the way, ought to be coordinated and consistent. Thanks! ~ Dpr 06:12, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Tomer, thanks for all your lucid comments--much appreciated. I will respond in greater depth later...maybe you should put all those explanations on the relevant articles. So Youtai was originally used by Jews to describe themselves, and Diao jin jiao by other Chinese to refer to Jews--we are clear on this? Moreover, these terms are not specific to Kaifeng but simply grew in prominence there because of the notable population concentrated there, and the terms spread across China? Thanks! ~ Dpr 06:41, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Nazarene Karaites

[edit]

Hi Tomer. It sounds familiar because it is another example of the same phenomenon; a Christian pastor converts to Judaism, but can't quite let go of Jesus, and eventually starts his own "modern" Nazarene micro-sect. As with the other movements, these tiny groups like to get on Wikipedia and advertise, but they are essentially unverifiable. This one has been promoting the group in Messianic Judaism and Qaryanism as well. For a previous manifestation of the phenomenon, see Talmidaism. As you can imagine, I've been quite busy this week, and haven't had much time on Wikipedia. Frankly, when this new editor was done I planned to clean up all these messes, which would probably involved some VfDs, but feel free to take the bull by the horns. Regarding your project, I'll try to take a look at it today if possible. Jayjg (talk) 22:51, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Pandeism - 1833

[edit]
  • I just found conclusive evidence of the use of the term "Pandeism" dating back to 1833 [7], being used by Godfrey Higgins, a follower of John Toland, the creator of pantheism.[8]. The term is used in a book written by Higgins called the Anacalypsis. -- 8^D BD2412gab 10:47, 2005 Apr 29 (UTC)

"Reverend" Cantor

[edit]

Merlinzor (talk · contribs) aka 68.195.57.9 (talk · contribs) appears to have a particular fixation on Lawrence Eliezer Kepecs, Catholic-Jewish reconciliation, and the use of the term "Reverend Cantor". Would you mind looking at his recent edits and giving your opinion? Jayjg (talk) 18:21, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I e-mailed you, but didn't get a response. Jayjg (talk) 14:29, 24 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Since you were asking, I will provide an answer.

I was simply wondering, whether the "Star of David" might have acquired any meaning beyond mere ornament already in late antiquity. The way the symbol was used in the synagogue of Kafarnaum (Qfar-Nachum) seemed to support this possibility to me (NOT just on the floor but in a prominent position at the facade), but it is 20 years ago that I was "gallivanting" through Israel and I could not find any photographs displaying this detail. And since I am no expert anyway, I decided to invite other users to give some comments on the issue, either supporting or objecting - isn't this the purpose of discussion pages?

Now, why was I mentioning that I was myself in Kafarnaum (Qfar-Nachum) ? Not in search for "kudos". In my view, it is a serious problem with Wikipedia that authors/contributors usually do not give sources or references for their stuff. People just claim something, and the rest of the world has to believe it. So I decided to state explicitly where the information about this particular occurence of this symbol/ornament comes from. • 1. Thank you for your edits to the Pandeism page - it is going to turn out to be quite an article, I think.
  • 2. You may be interested in getting in touch with my former major professor, Dr. Abramham D. Lavender. He's the president of the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies. Come to think of it, he should have an article, he's published some 6 or 7 books as well. There's a link to the Society on his page.
  • Cheers! -- BD2412 thimk 03:23, 2005 May 4 (UTC)

Israelis Template

[edit]

I have an edited template I have put together at: User:Goodoldpolonius2/israel. We are discussing it at Template talk:israelis. Any chance you want to weigh in? --Goodoldpolonius2 05:09, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously my politics are pretty distant from most people who are usually working on Israeli topics. I'm a diaspora Jew, and proud to be. I am not a Zionist in any sense beyond believing in Israel's having the same right to exist as any other state, and the Jews having the same right to live in that land as anyone else. (In the 1940s, this would have made me clearly a Zionist. In the present geopolitical circumstances, many would define this as an anti-Zionist position.) Most of my work on Jewish topics is either about diaspora Jews or about matters so ancient as to precede the diaspora; I'm also a modest participant in topics related to Arab-Israeli conflicts, usually with the specific role of trying to mediate the inevitable conflicts over articles about conflicts.

Usually I leave the mainstream Israeli topics alone, focusing precisely on adding short articles in areas that would otherwise be completely ignored. In this case, IZAK specifically asked me to comment, and then the response to my comments was basically dismissive. Should I be pleased? I think not. It's one thing when I walk in a door and am effectively told I'm not welcome. It's another thing when someone invites me in to tell me I'm not welcome. -- Jmabel | Talk 21:48, May 6, 2005 (UTC)

  • Jmabel, pardon my intrusion here, but in all fairness it was not User:Tomer who invited you to give your input at Template talk:Israelis. It was me who called for your input and I think that User:Tomer does not know you as well as I do and so felt the need to "defend Israel" in a somewhat more assertive and ascerbic fashion. I am fully aware of your positions on many issues and I do not ask for your agreement with me or anyone else. But I do know that your advice and input are always wise and helpful because you do provide other NEEDED dimensions for Jewish/Israel articles and you are deserving of recognition. My responses were not meant to tell you that you "are not welcome" --- in any case, how is that possible on Wikipedia when any responsible editor can contribute anywhere? --- but rather, to engage you in a VERY MINOR debate to see where we could re-evaluate things. And thanks to the debate, a link to the Israeli peace camp has already been suggested (by User:MathKnight) and added (by me), see [9], so good did come from your observations, as I thought and expected. I hope this proves my point, and calms your feeling of being "unwelcome" when in fact you are ALWAYS more than welcome as far as I am concerned. IZAK 22:18, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I'm the one who cleaned up the article, removing the more obvious fluff and hero-worship, and adding all those links; I mostly added the links because that immense and ubiquitous "The Most Highly Reverend Cantor Hazzan Lawrence Eliezer Kepecs presenting a unique and beautiful mezuza to His Most Pontifical Holiness Pope John Paul II during an earth shattering and unprecedented meeting with 190 Jewish people Rabbis, Cantors, and leaders" picture needed some sort of balance. I'm on the fence as to whether or not he's notable; at least he's been noticed in a few real publications. Jayjg (talk) 16:50, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You've done enough there, now all that's needed is for people to vote. I don't think these "new editors" comprehend Wikipedia policy, and their posts show that. Jayjg (talk) 21:33, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've never been to Stanley, Wisconsin, but I laughed to think of other Wisconsin town's that size. I often see the growth in Weston whenever I get home via Hwy 29 from Green Bay. I just hope they don't ruin Camp Philips Road. -Acjelen 05:02, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

my proposal

[edit]

Despite our differences I really always appreciate your comments. I am sorry if I misunderstood you again. PLEASE if you think that I have misrepresented you in the proposal itself, tell me how and what change you want me to make, Slrubenstein | Talk 19:02, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot say it enough: I really, really, really appreciate your comments on my proposal. Slrubenstein | Talk 19:20, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

my proposal

[edit]

Hi,

I just announced I am stepping away from the proposal discussion for several days. I know I have polarized the discussion, which I didn't want to do. If you are willing, I hope you will visit the page periodically and do whatever you can or think is appropriate to facilitate discussion between both sides.

Thanks

Steve

Yehudei sheqolenique, ever heard of them? Can you look at and verify the article at all? Thanks IZAK 10:25, 19 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Contact Dr. Lavender

[edit]

Actually, you can email Dr. L - his contact info is on his website, which is probably the best way to get a hold of him. -- BD2412 talk 19:09, 2005 May 19 (UTC)

another favor?

[edit]

I hope you haven't lost patience with my impositions on your generosity and wisdom, but can you respond to Rangerdude and Gene Nygaard here [10]

My view is, if people want to stop paying attention to this proposal and let it go as it were inactive, I can't object. But when I first formulated this proposal, I looked at the Wikipedia think tank to see how to do it. The think tank lists proposals in alphabetical order. Some date to 2004, some even to 2003. They haven't been deleted or "closed," they are just there, inactive, part of the reservoir of ideas at Wikipedia.

I am content for my proposal, now also included in the "think tank" proposals, to rest their untouched until the coming of the messiah (oops!). But I do think that if anyone -- even five years form now -- is interested in the idea, they have a right to look at it. ANd if over the next few weeks or months people want to check it out and check in they should.

Frankly, I see Gene Nygaard and Rangerdud's "proposal" to be just another way to make it disappear. That's not right and I did explain my reasoning but for obvious reasons I shouldn't respond to them any more ...

Thanks, Slrubenstein | Talk 15:31, 20 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Israel

[edit]

Hi Tomer: Please contact User:Humus sapiens who wishes to start a Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Israel See his request below. Thanks IZAK 05:57, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IZAK (and everyone else here :), Do you think it's time to create Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Israel similar to Wikipedia:Wikiportal/India, Wikipedia:Wikiportal/New Zealand and other Category:Wikiportals? I'm writing this here because it was you who made those wonderful templates and we don't have a portal yet where we could communicate. What do you think? Humus sapiensTalk 05:26, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Humus, it's only me here, but I will pass your message on to "everyone". Yes, your suggestion is excellent, it is certainly time for what you describe, but I have no experience with Wikipedia portals, and if you know how, go ahead and start an Israel portal and I am sure editors of Israel-related articles will support you and join in the effort/s. Behatzlachah. IZAK 05:33, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Tomer, consider youself invited to WP:WNBI. Spread the word. Humus sapiensTalk 09:41, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Judaism

[edit]

Tomer, from the above, how about a Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Judaism as well? Does it help your "quest" for a Judaism "super-template" in any way? How does a Wikiportal interface with a large Wikipedia template? Would you mind looking into this? Thanks. IZAK 06:03, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

User:Sirkumsize is suggesting these articles should be merged with Jewish denominations; I thought you might want to comment. Jayjg (talk) 21:07, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

er and ai

[edit]

I don't think there's any substantive difference between ɚ, ɝ, and . From the phonetic point of view they'd all be formed basically identically. It's more a matter of convention to use ɚ in unstressed syllables and ɝ in stressed syllables and keep r as a symbol for nonsyllabic use. But not everyone follows this convention; in his Phonology of English, Michael Hammond uses for stressed and unstressed syllables. (Other people use ɜr, especially in broad or phonemic transcription, to keep symbols to a minimum and because there's evidence from language games that rhotic speakers consider turn (for example) to have four phonemes: most fluent backward talkers say [nrʌt] for turn, not [nɝt], though it's difficult to know whether the spelling is having an influence.) As for ʌɪ vs. , I think it's fairly common to have different qualities in whiter and wider, but I've never heard of differentiating hide (n.) and hide (v.) this way. Do you do that? --Angr/comhrá 18:11, 24 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

And you and they all distinguish the two meanings of hide that way too? --Angr/comhrá 18:26, 24 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation of ’Ivrit

Yeah, in retrospect, "/r/" would have been better. I'll go ahead and change that back. Thanks for pointing out my mistake! --Whimemsz 19:17, May 24, 2005 (UTC)

Pronunciation vs Phonology

[edit]

Since I majored in Linguistics in college, I have deep appreciation for the information on the X phonology pages. But as a perpetual student of foreign languages, I feel that a simple guide to the pronunciation of a language, accessible by non-linguists, is ultimately more helpful to the majority of researchers accessing Wikipedia. I would prefer cross-linking between the articles.

I suppose I wouldn’t have a problem conjoining the pronunciation information with the phonology information. I do have two concerns however: The first is the possibility of someone hitting the page, looking for phonological information and seeing a pronunciation guide, or vise-versa, and moving on thinking it didn’t cover what they were looking for because what they wanted was lower on the page; the second being the inherent redundancy of the information. It is possible that both concerns may well be solved with clever sectioning and TOC.

I will certainly acquiesce to the consensus of the community. If we should combine the pages, do you have a sense which should come first in the article? From an encyclopedic standpoint, we might want to start with the technical aspect and then break it down. On the other hand, from a resource standpoint, we might want to start with the more usable form then move to the technical description.

As for Hmong, we have a very large population here in Minnesota. The more I saw signs and documents written in Hmong, the more curious I became in the language. Plus the fact that the way Hmong is pronounced is so different from what the written word would imply, I finally just decided to spend the time to acquire at least a cursory understanding of the language. Assess vs. access

[edit]

Not quite; "assessible" was what I found originally, and "accessible" was what I created to fix the problem. When I found the "assessible" category, my first thought was "They're public services! Their finances have to be assessed regularly, don't they?" But the person who created that actually meant "special services for people with disabilities", so "accessible" is what it should have been. Good thing I have admin powers and can actually delete stuff...*grin* Bearcat 17:11, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for a neutral solution....

I liked your idea of moving the "offensive" parts of Childlike mentality to my user page. I'd rather save a useful article than have it deleted as a religious rant. Cwolfsheep 22:28, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
