Proposal for WP to DOAC in 2016
[edit]I have added Atlantic City to the list of Wikimania 2016 bids. There is a timeline there someplace. One note so far is that it is a little tricky creating interlinks because Wikimedia is "meta". ie:had a little trouble making Atlantic City not a red-link, and to avoid creating new unnecessary pages on MediaWiki--->helpful page Help:Interwikimedia links. Also, anyone who is helping with this, one thing we can do right now is keep an eye on the schedule as they have not set the dates yet as far as i can tell and if a date is set for traditionally busy times in AC, support could be denied. And I do not know if including this information in the article is a good idea, so feel free to discuss.24.0.133.234 (talk) 14:21, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
See more or join the steering committee here http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Atlantic_City#Team_sign-up_and_discussion_Join_the_Steering_Committee 24.0.133.234 (talk) 17:25, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
- I think it is great that folks in Atlantic City want to get more involved! I would highly recommend reaching out to Wikimedia NYC. This would be in their region, and it is very difficult to get a bid very far with no registered users involved and no Wikimedia affiliate supporting it. Also, I would not recommend using this page to discuss this topic. This is a conversation for Meta. --Varnent (talk)(COI) 20:57, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! I agree that discussion of this should be moved to http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Atlantic_City#Team_sign-up_and_discussion_Join_the_Steering_Committee The NYC group has been mentioned in another reply, and although they are the official regional area(?), I'm also wondering about the Pennsylvania group since AC is in South Jersey and more regionally related to Philadelphia and they are sending a delegation to Wikimania2014. I did add something about this to this topic's article page-so discussion about whether or not that edit is suitable does apply.24.0.133.234 (talk) 00:30, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
- Which Pennsylvania group are you referring to? There is no officially recognized Pennsylvania affiliate, and there is not one currently seeking affiliation. The only three regional affiliates approved in the US are NYC, DC, and New England. The NYC chapter covers Pennsylvania, and that will not change for at least a couple of years. The DC and NYC names are deceiving as they are actually regional and cover multiple states. Honestly, I think your best bet is to focus on 2017 and build up an infrastructure in the meantime. As it stands, it is incredibly unlikely this bid would succeed without affiliate support and a track-record of successful events. If you look at recent successful bids, they have all gone to affiliates that were recognized (or actively on their way) before the bid process began (Wikimedia UK, Wikimedia DC, Wikimedia Hong Kong, etc.). There are successful affiliates preparing bids for 2016, and since the US hosted just a couple of years ago, I suspect other countries will get preference for at least another year. You seem to be very experienced with Wikipedia, but may also benefit from learning more about the broader Wikimedia movement. I know that can seem daunting, but if you want the bid to succeed, you will need to be more familiar with the structure of the broader movement. I would also suggest familiarizing yourself with the m:Movement affiliates and m:Wikimania Handbook. You are obviously welcome to take or not take the advice, and I do not want you to get the impression that I do not want or think you can succeed - but I do think there is some more groundwork necessary. --Varnent (talk)(COI) 16:52, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for all of the great clues Varnet! I don't feel comfortable talking about groups since I'm pretty ignorant right now about all of them and trying to learn more. I do see where another entry for 2015 has been advised to try for 2016, so yeah-they may end-up being a better choice, and frankly I wouldn't want to stand in their way if they are viable. 2017 isn't up yet as far as I can see.
Right now this is just a fact-finding mission, unofficial bid-Atlantic City could do a Wikimania in their sleep, on a week's notice lol, so it isn't really a big deal for them but it would be nice to share what the city has to offer with Wikimania. The St Louis unofficial bid has not been updated in awhile, it doesn't hurt anyone to put AC out there as an option at this point. Another thing is that people from Canada have a history of visiting AC too-so bringing more Canadian Wikipedians to Wikimania could be another bonus-----but I don't want to get ahead of things. I haven't quite wrapped my head around Meta and WMF and all that entails, but you never know there could be someone who sees this who is proficient?-Like your suggestions here, and thank-you again24.0.133.234 (talk) 21:16, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Offshore wind Farm
[edit]Please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Atlantic_City,_New_Jersey&diff=prev&oldid=767227045 where I deleted a large chunk about the wind farm. I know that there is updated info. and legal rulings etc. but the text was horribly outdated and incorrect. It could use some updating or maybe a new article.TeeVeeed (talk) 17:19, 24 February 2017 (UTC)
Question timing of "decline" of AC
[edit]The article seems to put the decline of Atlantic City as the mid to late '60s. I grew up in Philadelphia in the '60s and I can still remember the highway to the shore being joked about as the "Atlantic City Parking Lot" during the summer, well into the end of the decade, and for good reason. In fact we started seeking out quieter, lees crowded places like Avalon, Stone Harbor and Sea Isle City because Atlantic City beaches were just too crowded! I also cannot believe you didn't have more about the beach, with the long ropes going out into the water for people to hang onto during the rough surf. And a mention about the horse that dove off the platform on Steel pier into the water, and the amazing amusement rides at the end of Million dollar pier that swooped out over the water. Atlantic City was a much more amazing place before the "Casino age". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.171.131.162 (talk) 04:51, 20 July 2017 (UTC)
Notable entries deletions
[edit]First, an apology for calling your addition "garbage," I'm just a bit tired of cleaning up tedious Yanny/Laurel vandalism. Per Wikipedia:Stand-alone_lists#Selection_criteria, Wikipedia:Notability_(people)#Lists_of_people and Wikipedia:Write the article first, names don't belong in these lists unless (1) there is already an article about the subject (2) the subject would pass WP:BIO notability criteria if an article were to be created about them. I don't see how that's the case for either of these entries. Being a contestant on a reality show doesn't cut it (see notes at bottom of Wikipedia:Notability_(music)). Making a recording that is tied to a flash-in-the-pan meme doesn't cut it either for the same reason we don't have an article about the owner of The dress. OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:17, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
- Apology accepted. The model has some press and she is mentioned in the Project Runway Season 12 article. She was the model for the person that won season 12. So it would be possible to un red link her. The yanny/Laurel guy, well right now a google search is filled with the yanny/laurel thing, but he is not only notable for that. He goes back years on IMDB and is a listed SAG performer. TeeVeeed (talk) 00:56, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
- Usually reality show winners that don't have significant notability beyond the show might have a redirect to the show/season article, but not their own article.(Wikipedia:Notability_(music)#Criteria_for_musicians_and_ensembles) I don't see any significant roles and either Jones's film or theater credits (see Wikipedia:Notability_(people)#Entertainers. Put another way, if articles were created about each of them, they wouldn't be speedyable, but I highly doubt they'd survive an AfD (though WP:RECENTISM and love of memes could bring out the masses to !vote for Jones). As of 2023 this Wiki page is a disaster
[edit]Everything is out of date! History section is wildly oversized. Too overwhelming to know where to begin. Bhdshoes2 (talk) 16:25, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
Proposal to split off history section?
[edit]The history section is far too long, and the article is also on the long side. Also, we already have List of casinos in New Jersey, so some of the information on the casinos can be moved there, especially the canceled ones. I haven't touched this article so I wanted to pitch it, in case anyone was watching this article. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:28, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
