Moved this sentence here: "Thus, in June 1762 a German princess who had a legitimate claim to the Russian throne as wife of a tsar ,became Catherine II, empress of Russia."
The original sentence had no legitimate claim. OK, someone thinks it was legitimate. I don't want to argue such a trivial point, but the sentence is fairly pointless if the meaning is reversed. There's not much point stating the obvious, so I removed the sentence. The question of legitimacy belongs here, not in the article. Graham Chapman
