If your company ("Dial4exportmarket"?) is notable, it's likely that people who aren't connected to it will want to create an article about it, even with no encouragement from you. Userboxes/Stats & Tools/Edit count

I want to add a couple of Userboxes to my profile page showing how many articles I've created, etc. Are these particular Edit-count Userboxes dynamic or manual? Adding/updating photos

Dear Help Community:

I have recently updated the entry for University of Florida administrator Scott Angle to reflect recent job changes and an award. I also uploaded and submitted a photo. However, that photo is still not posted to his page a week later. Can someone help me understand how I get the updated photo included on his wikipedia page?

@AgScribe One issue is that the photo needs to be one that you took. You cannot just upload the subject's portrait from his workplace, which is a copyrighted work of said workplace, and claim it as your own work. —C.Fred (talk) 13:55, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

I work for the organization, and the our organization's photographer took the photo. It is authorized by Dr. Angle, so I don't understand how that is a copyright issue. It's not enough that you simply give your word that you're allowed to do it. The copyright holder has to explicitly grant Wikipedia an irrevocable license compatible with Wikipedia's policies (that will also allow anyone to use it). More details can be found at WP:DCP. Are you talking about in the page history of an article/page? That can mean that the relevant article is under Pending Changes review.

No, just a bog standard edit. on the left side there are yellow borders and markings, blue on the corresponding new edit column on the right. I accidentally pressed syntax highlighter and while I was trying to get rid, I went to preferences so must have altered something in 'editing'. That's the default look of diffs. It sounds like you changed it in the past and then changed it back to default recently. I guess you want "Display diffs with the old yellow-and-green colors and design" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:32, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

@William silvers jr: The tag was not added automatically by your addition of an external link, it was added manually by another editor. You should not remove the tag yourself, and for the future you should not edit the article about yourself. Instead, use edit requests on the article talk page. sort list of Cite book

BrucePL, the sources listed at Agent Orange § General and cited references and in all subsections of Agent Orange § Further reading are already in alphabetical order by author name, which has been done manually by editors at that article.

If you're trying to sort the sources by title, you'll have to copypaste the source list into another app and sort them manually for your own purpose, or import all the citations with citation management software compatible with COinS metadata, then export them into a spreadsheet, then re-export them as concatenated text blocks. Thank you for your reply. I'm not trying to do any of the above. On that page under Further reading/Books is a list of books that is listed by author. I added Fox; anothe user added Wilcox. Both are out of alpha order. I edited the list, which is a template of a list inside of Refbegin and Refend. I cannot figure out how to move Fox and Wilcox into alpha order position. That's what you get for using the visual editor. Switch to the source editor and move the Fox and Wilcox {{cite book}} templates to their proper positions.

Edit Notices for 2 templates

Hello all,

As can probably be seen in my editing history, I want to add editnotices to two templates: Template:Style & Template:Manual of Style as a first line of defense against editors adding MoS links to one and not the other. However, despite trying my best to follow suggestions on the editnotice page, I can not seem to make that work. If anyone could add an editnotice to each template, that would be great.

I'm assuming an account with your name is editing the Wikipedia article on you? See WP:IMPERSONATION for the section of the username policy concerning this; if they're impersonating you as you say they fall under the scope of this. Go to Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention with the username of the individual and they can help you more there.

As for the content of their edits, if they are making libelous claims, go to WP:BLPN and explain your situation; the team there can remove the record of the information from the article. See WP:LIBEL for the policy on harmful and unsourced claims on Wikipedia.

If, however, the user is revealing non-public personal information about you, then see Wikipedia:Requests for oversight and send them an email. In an instance like this, I'd suggest not publicly acknowledging the information exists, after sending the email don't tell anyone you did (that's just my advice, not official policy; do as you please, but note that anonymous edits to Wikipedia are done under your IP address, which can be geolocated). same picture on multiple articles

hi everyone I currently need help with an article (2024 Bank of America Roval 400) but it got a new track layout, how would I be able to add a picture (im sure if i was to make an accurate picture of the track layout i could list it as my own work) to make it go on multiple articles without my account at risk of termination or something like that. 45BearsFan (talk) 00:09, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

Be sure you understand WP:NFF, the criteria for fair-use files. I'm not sure if the track layout for a motorsport event is eligible for public domain / creation of an "own work" piece, so I'm hoping someone more familiar with the matter will chime in.

Non-free files must have a separate and reliable rationale for every single page they appear on. However, images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons don't and can be used on any article, assuming it's appropriate to include them. GeorgeMemulous (talk) 00:41, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

@45BearsFan: Please take a look at c:COM:Own work for reference because "own work" has a specific meaning when used in terms of images and image copyright. You also might want to as about this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject NASCAR or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Motorsport since most likely track layout images appear in other auto racing related articles; for example, like the ones used in Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500 and British Grand Prix. I don't think the layout of a racing track is something that in and off itself is eligible for copyright protection, but drawings and other visual representations of a track created by others probably are. So, for reference, you can't really take someone else's work and claim it as your own, and you can't really create a slavish reproduction (e.g. a tracing) of someone else's work and claim it as your own. The members of one of the WikiProjects related to auto racing should know the best way to go about doing this. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:37, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi GeorgeMemulous. I believe the templates {{Contentious topics/alert}} and {{Contentious topics/alert/first}} can be used for general notification purposes, and {{uw-1rr}} can be used for WP:1RR notification purposes. Wrong distance in your OpenStreetMap

Please note that the street Ronda de Mulhacen 1, Valle del Este, 04620 Vera, Spain, is not at 10kms distance, it is actuallly a street within the Valle del Este Golf, and that street Ronda de Mulhacen is 750 metres from the Golf Club house, this wrong information appears in all the advertisements of flats in Booking, please correct the wrong distance information in OpenStreetMap as soon as possible, the correct distance for the street Ronda de Mulhacen 1, Valle del Este, Vera 04620, Spain is 750 metres not 10Kms as you are wrongly indicating. Problems moving an article due to a redirect

I have written an article about the US Army in WW II but unfortunately there is already an article named United States Army in World War II which is about a historical work and a redirect named United States Army during World War II to Military history of the United States during World War II So I have no idea what to do... Hello, Mr Lovecraft. A page mover is somebody who has a particular right that lets them do page moves out of the ordinary, such as moving over an existing redirect, or moving without leaving a redirect. See WP:Page mover. ColinFine (talk) 16:50, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

You asked to move the draft to United States Army in World War II here and that was rejected because that article already exists. You may be able to move the article to United States Army during World War II yourself or do another TR explaining the previous one was a mistake. TSventon (talk) 17:06, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

@Mr.Lovecraft, what you first need to do is move the article that is in the way, to a title like United States Army in World War II (historical work). That will leave behind a redirect that you can then move your own article on top of - but don't do that yet. First, you need to go here [2], to see all of the incoming links, and make sure that they link directly to United States Army in World War II (historical work) instead. Otherwise, people expecting to follow a link to the book series will end up at your article and be confused. @Asilvering Somehow it didn´t work. I moved the United States Army in World War II to United States Army in World War II (historical work) I also linked all incoming links to it and I add a hatnote at my article. Then I renamed the (disambiguation) page to United States Army in World War II (historical work) (disambiguation). However, the hatnote in my article page it did not changed it still says For other uses, see Mr.Lovecraft/Construction site beta (disambiguation). Moreover I still can´t move my article to United States Army in World War II because there is still a redirect to United States Army in World War II which is in fact the above mentioned article United States Army in World War II (historical work) Mr.Lovecraft (talk) 09:27, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

The incoming links haven't been fixed yet. See [3] - they're all still there. They need to link to United States Army in World War II (historical work). Do that before you request the move. Then the hatnote is the last step, after you've done everything else. @Mr.Lovecraft: The subject you want to write about seems to already be fairly extensively covered on Wikipedia. This doesn't mean new articles about it can't be created, but there's a good chance that much of the content in your "draft" is already covered in some shape of form in existing articles about the US Army, World War II or both. For this reason, you might want to discuss what you're trying to do at WT:MILHIST to make sure you're not creating a unneeded WP:CONTENTFORK (i.e. a redundant article) and see whether it might be better to incorporate your content into already existing articles instead of creating a new stand-alone article. At the same time, if it turns out that an article like the one would be considered a good thing to create, the members of the MILHIST WikiProject will almost surely be able to help your sort out the naming and any other issues you might find yourself having. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:26, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

when editing the firs paragraph, when i search up the page on my browser, it doesnt show the version including what i edited on the preview thingy, but, one user, he edited the first line of a page, and in a few weeks, when i search up the page, his edited version shows up on the preview. i have an idea. Search up St Neots on your internet browser. It says Eynesbury,Eaton Ford and Eaton Socon form part of the town. If you refer to Wikipedia's page preview feature when you hover over a link like St Neots without clicking it then I currently see: "The areas of Eynesbury, Eaton Ford, Eaton Socon, Love's Farm, Wintringham, and part of Eynesbury Hardwicke form part of the town." That's the same as the article says. However, it may have displayed differently earlier. mw:Page Previews#FAQ says: "The Page Preview shows a cached version of a page. Guidance on 3RR

Today, in my work editing Hurricane Milton, I made a total of five reverts to the page in 24 hours (00z 7 October to 00z 8 October). See 1, 2, 3. 4, and 5. While two were reversions of uncited material and one was a reversion of vandalism, the question came to mind: could I, in full good faith and by no means intentional, have broken the 3 revert rule on this page? Of my two content reversions, one was reverted right back before a third user reverted that. I should also note there had been a great deal of time between the reversions, and all the content reverted was on different content. I'm just looking for a bit of guidance before I make a fool out of myself; could I, had two other content disputes occurred, been in proper violation of the 3RR, even if, from my perspective, I by no means was I edit warring? Note also the page had received close to 175 edits in that same time period. GeorgeMemulous (talk) 00:06, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

3RR applies to more than 3 reverts on the same page within 24 hours, and there are various exemptions, including removal of vandalism.

Although the Rule is strictly stated, I think allowances would be made when the reverter is making single reversions of multiple edits by multiple users rather than re-re-reverting the same edit(s), and where some of the edits are vandalism, and when the subject is fast moving and information in sources may be changing and contradictory.

Unless an Administrator gives you a warning (an immediate block seems to me unlikely), I don't think you need to worry. However, it would be nice if an Administrator experienced in this matter gave us some authoritative advice here.

Revision of edit by apparent sock-puppet and threat.

Hello, I recently made an edit to a page to fix the formatting of a section. Within two minutes, my revision was reverted and someone called "Adriana Nader" posted a message saying: "This is your only warning; if you vandalize Wikipedia again, as you did at Hermann Göring, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Adriana Nader (talk) 05:17, 8 October 2024 (UTC)" There was no vandalism; no information was added or deleted; only the formatting was changed to better present the information.

On looking at the person's user page, I found that it was created at the same time as the edit reversion, and has already been tagged with the note: "This user page may meet Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion as a page created by a banned or blocked user" and on the talk page, it says "This account has been blocked indefinitely as a sockpuppet that was created to violate Wikipedia policy."

Can I (a) remove the so-called warning from the User talk page for this IP address and (b) revert my edit back? Also, could someone explain why someone would apparently create a sockpuppet account solely to go after a single, non-substantive edit?

@CanonNi:Probably not. Doing a crop inside the server every time an image is served is a little bit server-intensive in the first place, so it is deprecated. This is even more true for non-rectangular cropping. Best practice would be to download the image to you computer and then use image-processing software (e.g., the GIMP) to crop it, and then upload the result as a new image, making sure to attribute the old image. -Arch dude (talk) 15:21, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

First see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Infoboxes#References in infoboxes for whether to make a reference at all (not how to do it). You have used VisualEditor which has a tool to add references but it doesn't work inside infoboxes and other template calls. You can write the source code for the reference inside the parameter value in VisualEditor but it may be difficult if you haven't tried references in source code. See Help:Referencing for beginners with citation templates. Another option is to make the reference somewhere outside the infobox, switch to the source editor on the pencil icon at the top right, and move the reference code to an infobox parameter. Removing stub class – actions?

Hi, when removing stub class from an article, Wikipedia:Stub says "When removing stub templates, users should also visit the talk page and update the WikiProject classifications as necessary." I'm not sure how to interpret that "as necessary" correctly. Is it editing {{WikiProject banner shell|class=Stub}} and removing |class=Stub? Or replacing that with something else? Need help in blocking a collection of IP adresses

on the si.wikipedia.org recently many uses in ip addresses have started removing interwiki links from articles. it has gotten out of hand. the admins have blocked them individually with 1 day expiration. but as soon as one is blocked, same edits are done in a different ip. is there anyway to find if they are from the same ip block, if so can they be blocked forever from editing? its very hard to go track down all of their disruptive edits in articles.

I seem to have broken my user talk page using the archive bot

I was attempting to create yearly archives however after the bot ran and created the pages, none of the created talk pages link correctly and my talk page doesn't link to the archives. How do I fix this situation? As can be seen at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ergzay the Archives list shows no archives, and the archive pages at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ergzay/Archives/2022 have broken headers that don't link to anything. @Ergzay: Place {{Annual archive|root=User talk:Ergzay|prefix=Archives/}} at top of the archive pages. I have tried to automate it for future archives.[4] It's possible the next visit by the archive bot will build an index with archive links for display in the archive box at User talk:Ergzay. Remove accidental italicization of page title

Made a new page regarding a famous murder trial in Wyoming, at "Trial of Ed Cantrell", but the page title itself is italicized, was looking how to undue that so it would be similar to the trial of Imelda Marcos or trial of George Zimmerman in plain text without italicization. As a first step, assuming what they're doing is unambiguously problematic but not necessarily occurring multiple times, you should likely warn them. Reporting an editor without reaching out to them to advise them that their edits are disruptive can be considered bad-faith. Hello, Callmehelper. One of the core principles of Wikipedia is to assume good faith. When somebody makes an edit that you think is wrong, most of the time they are doing so because they think their edit is an improvement. The thing to do then is to open a discussion with them - and a stance of "I am right and you are wrong, so there!" is not a good starting point for a discussion. If you cannot reach consensus, then please look at dispute resolution.

Only if it is clear that a person's behaviour is damaging to Wikipedia (and not just holding a different view from you) should you even think of "reporting" them.

Yeah. I chat with him. Instead he should be understood, he claimed me that I am disruptive and violate wikipedia guidelines. Believe me I am as accurate as anyone can be here with original facts that are available. For example if any politician speak something but wikipedia written his one or two lines of that speech that misleading the whole point so what I do is just adding some more lines of that speech which is originally available and authentic. Even in that wikipedia page context some more talk of that speech should be there. But he claimed me that I am disruptive n all twice the time as I reverted when he removed that additional part.

If you can't agree, please follow the steps in WP:dispute resolution.

Be careful to watch out for original research. If a politician has been reliably reported as saying something, a Wikipedia article can say that they have said it, citing that source. But it cannot say anything at all about what they meant, or the reasons they said it, or what the effect was of them saying it, unless they are paraphrasing what a single reliable published source has said about it - and preferably, a source wholly unconnected with the politician in question. Best way to combine references

At Reem Kassis I've got:

NPR, The Guardian, The Independent, New York Magazine, Buzzfeed, San Francisco Chronicle, The National Post, Saveur Magazine, Departures, and Milk Street listed it among the best cookbooks published in 2017.

Which seems like overkill. I'd like to change this to something like

Multiple outlets, including NPR, New York Magazine, The Independent, and Saveur, named the book to their best-of lists for 2017.

On 8th October I was checking Tim Minchin who had his birthday yesterday and was born in 1975 but his age shows as 48 not 49;

I have now checked others born on 7th October ; Birth name Salman Butt / Born 7 October 1984 (age 39) Birth name Nicole Ari Parker / Born October 7, 1970 (age 53)

BUT the 6th and the 8th show correctly ; Birth name Amy Jo Johnson / Born October 6, 1970 (age 54) Birth name Tetsuya Nomura / Born October 8, 1970 (age 54)

I see from the page editor that age is calculated so what is wrong with 7th October ??

@WikiIan: The rendered version of pages are cached on our servers for performance reasons. The age was sometimes computed before the birthday and cached with the rest of the page. You can purge an article to force an update right away. Otherwise it usually happens automatically within a day or two. It doesn't work to bypass your own browser cache. ​​ The above was explained to this user several months back at User talk:115.70.23.77#Help Desk questions, but it seems to have been going on for years. For awhile the questions stopped so I assumed they just figured things out; recently, though, they've started back up again essentially posting the same type of "Please fix this. I don't know what's wrong" questions as before. In most cases, these appear to be self-inflicted wounds that could easily be avoided if the user just slowed down and checked their edits before clicking "Publish changes". Errors in reference citation syntax are, I'm pretty sure, indicated at the top of the editing window after clicking "Show preview"; so, it doesn't seem to be too much to ask for this user check their work and then fix things themselves. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone needs help every now and then, but this has become too regular of an occurrence (at least in my opinion) and isn't inspiring confidence in this user's ability to avoid making similar mistakes moving forward.

Another issue is that they also seem to be constantly switching between editing while logged in and editing while logged out. While this isn't expressly prohibited per se, it too seems to have been going on for years, and there's no indication of it stopping anytime soon despite this user having already been blocked once for inappropriately using multiple accounts. At some point, people might start to whether this user really has the competence to edit, and whether whatever positives they may be providing to the project outweigh their apparent inability to learn from their mistakes. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:23, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
